Best wheels for CX?(11 posts)

Best wheels for CX?AJS

Not a nOOb question, because I've tried several different wheelsets over the years for road/CX. Some were expensive name-brand pre-built's, some were custom build's.

Just wondering tho' what some of you all have found to be successful wheels for your weight/riding style. (?)

At 135-140 lbs (Crazy, but depended on what I eat, I loose 5lbs easy).

Here are my three wheelsets:

-Campagnolo Moskva 80's laced 3x to chorus hubs, great old stock build, moderately light. Durrable and ride nice. I had to re-build the front wheel as it had a slight kink in to that drove me crazy.

-New and have not riden them, Open pro's laced 3x to Daytona hubs, wheelset is lighter that above and most likely equally strong. I will race on these, record hubs are only a few grams lighter.

-My thrid wheelset is for my singlespeed, suzue pro max hubs laced 3x to cxp30 (deep v) rims, nice, nice, nice, a bit heavy but have lasted a season racing and commuting 2000 miles, including stairs, potholes, curbs and expansion bridge joints. Killer, well built.

am a Clydesdale. all wheels 32h 3x.
1 set Specialized S-Works (Hugi 240 in Spec. Hub body built by Hugi) to Velocity Fusion Bck, Mavic O/P Front.) will change front to Velocity Aerohead when it's time. Dig the Fusion was handbuilt.
Velocity AeroHead to Ultegra Hubs. So far so good. light and abusable
Ultegra Hubs to 90's era Rigida Crit Tubulars, hand built. I'll let ya know still haven't rode yet.
Don't know if I could find the Moskva's...AJS

...but I know a shop that still has a ton of Montreal's laying around for about $40.

Actually I didn't think of any of the old Campy rims, because they've been out of circulation for so long, but they'd prolly be great CX build's.

I need a Centaur group on this rig!! :(

I just built my first 'cross bike last season, so don't quote me as an expert on 'cross, BUT I have been riding a looooong time, so have seen a few things in my day.

My first 'cross wheelset was a GL330 pair of wheels I had laying around. Not so good. Had to true them after both races I ran them in.

I have since built a pair of Velocity Escapes on some 32 hole XTR hubs, but have yet to 'cross them. (actually the front is a Mach2CD2 that is still straight, so I'm saving the other Escape for a backup)

If I had the $$, I'd try a pair of Zipp440s for around here (SoCal/San Diego) since there isn't any mud to speak of.

we had that ONE STORM. the coastal rides were impossible, thick sticky clay. I ran 13 miles rode 1. Hey I'm going to do the Uber cross ride this winter, Big Laguna Meadow (when there is snow) down 67 to Poway, through Sycamore Canyon to Mast Ave to Mission Trails to Mission Gorge than down through Mission Valley to Ocean Beach. Should be about 70 miles, road -offroad Snow to Surf. Interested? I'm down in North Park.

You get any of the rain that they were saying was coming? I sure didn't! Poor bastards in FL are getting hammered, and all we have to deal with is a little 80-90 degree "heat."

I have a few friends that may be interested too, please keep me updated.
