Used the Frogs for 10 years and loved the free float.
Just got my 4th pair with their new cleats...absolutely impossible to engage in mud. Even worse, you can falsely engage and get stuck. Also pops out on climbs which was unheard of with the old design. (They never were great for cross because you can't just jump on them for engagement.)

How are the Time Atacs in comparison...will they have enough float? Too bad they changed a good design just to fit more shoes.

I know a lot of folks swear by them, but I really didn't like ATACs. Yes they are great in the mud, and yes they have float--but they are self-centering, which, to me, effectively neutralizes the float. My knees felt better after going to 959s.

Self centering is just what *I don't want*. I guess everything's a compromise. My LBS is taking back the Frogs (mud and all) and will set up the Times to see how they are.

Have Shimanos improved since I tried them 10 years ago?
They had no float then and strained my kness.

I haven't tested the new 959s in the mud yet, and I'm sure they don't work as well as ATACs in that respect, but I found them to be a great improvement over the shimanos of old. Easy in and out--I have yet to come unclipped on Colorado singletrack. I'm pretty happy with them. That said, they are going to feel pretty restrictive floatwise compared to Frogs–everything will.

I've never tried eggbeaters, but I think they have the same self-centering feature as the ATACs, so if you don't want self-centering (personally, I can't stand it), I think you're looking at either Frogs or 959s.

I highly recommend them. Especially for Cross.

They are awesome. 4-sided, float (16 or 10 degrees), bomber construction, re-buildable.

Go get them.

I've been using Eggbeaters for a long while and got my Candy's a few weeks ago.

I was riding Magnums for a loooong time, then went to clips and straps at the track, and couldn't handle the free float of my Magnums any more.

Bought some ATACs. Great for mtn, not so for 'cross (at my VERY beginner's skill level) The float is less than the Magnums' but there's that little spring thing holding you in that keeps you attached a little longer than the Magnums. Easier to get into than the Magnums: find the pedal and push = better remounts.

If you're going to race 'cross on the ATACs, I'd recommend going with the lower of the two float options.

I hear that Time's coming out with a smaller, slimmer pedal with less lateral float. I think I may see what they look like and upgrade to that system when it comes out.

been riding them for yrs both CX and MTB never had a problem. Pedals are a pref. issue like saddles. The high mud shedding of the ATACs have made them the ubiquitous cx pedal. I like the platform better than the Egg beaters though the new pedals look great. not great enough to swap out 3 rigs IMHO. I also hear they are kind of spendy.
