|Sorry if this has been discussed...couldn't find it in my seaches, but CC is now selling the CX softtail, built up with Ultegra level components for $1099. I am in the market for a Cx bike and this looked good to me, but I admit ignorance about the genre. Any thoughts from the more experienced?|

|My headshock C'dale cross is the perfect bike for backroad rides but not all that great for serious cross racing, perhaps part of the reason they aren't in the lineup for '04. That's why I picked up another bike for racing but spend most of my time on the C'dale for all around training. Here in Michigan once you got off the main roads you are usually on dirt roads.|

|Excel has their Ultegra cross kit for $899, so $1100 for a full bike is amazing.
But - rear suspension on a cross bike is about as useful as front suspension on a road bike. If you're going to race, and I highly, highly recommend that you give it a try - regardless of your fitness level - a compact frame is a hindrance. Shouldering is a big part of the sport, the more room in there the better.
Personally, at that price point, I'd get the Surly Cross Check with Ultegra kit from Excel. It's a better build kit and a more traditional frame. Not to mention that Surly is kewl and a softail KHS is a dork sled (tongue in cheek, kind of).

|That looks to be a very comfortable all-day rough road, off road, light single track, dual track kind of a bike.
(My favorite kind of ride actually).
The others made good points about it's suitability for getting you on the podium at cyclocross races - ride and run as hard as you can for an hour (and try not to puke) etc.
If the CC bug bit, you might want to consider something stiffer (Aluminum: Kona - Jake the Snake, Redline - Conquest, Trek - XO1 [among others] or steel: Surly - CrossChek, Lemond - Poprad, etc).
Or if you're looking for something truly off the wall - try a 29" mountain bike - it'll run 700c road tires or 700c x 2.1 knobbies for some volume and traction if you need it...
It looks like fun to me. Go for it, if that scratches your itch - so to speak...

small main triangle. Couldn't imagine someone shouldering this bike. I'll defer to the previous opinions about suspension's value for racing.
However, as a trail bike, it was fine. Having that little bit of cushioning really takes the edge off high-speed fire road assaults, and it also seemed a bit more comfortable for long road rides. (Not sure how much of that's attributable to the bumper, and how much credit should go to the True Temper OX (I had the team version).) A couple of caveats, if you're not already aware: this is not a bump-sucking, big-hit machine. You can expect an inch of travel at most, depending on your weight, and there is no adjustability. As far as I could determine, there are no replacement elastomers of differing durometer, and no way of dialing in preload, except for taking the shock apart and slipping a nickel under the elastomer (mentioned by a KHS rep...)
Sounds like a great deal for the bike.

|I should start by clarifying that my experience with KHS soft-tails is limited to the mountain bike version, my girlfriend owns one and I service it.
Firstly, there is provision for preload. You need to remove the rear wheel and tighten the plate with hex-key fitting at the base of the shock.
Secondly, I found replacement bumpers from an unlikely source. Most fork bumpers are too small for the soft-tail shock. But the replacement bumpers for the Cane Creek Thudbuster seatpost are almost identical in size. They come in five durometers and are readily available from Cane Creek.
Again, this is speaking from my experience with the MTB but the CX bike appears to have the same shock.

|The price is definitely right for a new bike with Ultegra.
Compare the pricing with the other makes from Trek XO1, Cannondale XR800, Redline Conquest (Pro is using 105), Fuji (105 as well) etc, the equipment group is at Sora/Tiagra level.
You won't go wrong, that's for certain.
