Not sure what constitutes a "CX type trail", but the Santa Monica and San Gabriel Mountains have lots of great fire roads and singletrack. At the far west end of the Santa Monicas there's Sycamore Canyon, which offers an easy fire road running in from the beach all the way to Newbury Park; the main road is not too challenging, but it gives access to some lung-busting climbs and excellent singletrack. Another good place is Cheeseboro Canyon, in Agoura. I like the fire road running up through Palo Comado Canyon to China Flats. Topanga State Park, Malibu Creek State Park, the Backbone Trail, Rustic Canyon, "dirt Mulholland"...

One of the best sources for trail info is www.socalmtb.com; click on "Trailheads". The listings are categorized by county, plus there are links to the most recent updates.

By CX trails I meant nothing too technical or with big drop offs. Long fireroads would be the ideal and I'll check out your suggestions, as well as the link.

W/c part of Los Angeles? Santa Monica Mountains would be your best bet. My favorites would be Sullivan Canyon/Ridge entering it from Camp Josepho off Sunset.

Not really a trail but here's something the wife and I do. I built a little barrier out of plywood (I made it a bit higher than the regulation ones, for extra training) we take it to the local college and set it up in the grass near some stairs or whatever we want then do some practice running over it and up/down the stairs and riding through the grass its fun helps a lot and we get lots of funny looks from people. As for trails, Turnbull canyon in Whittier has a good fireroad with some nice flat areas on top and Chino hills park is pretty good too
