Front Derailleur OR Single Ring Guards?(4 posts)

Front Derailleur OR Single Ring Guards?highcamp

With Millar's 600m-to-go chain drop during the prologue fresh in everyone's head, I'd like to know what people think about racing with a single ring using either a front derailleur to keep the chain in place vs. using the double guards. Problem with the double guards is they cost money (extra money), whereas I already have a front derailleur. What are the pros/cons of either system?

I have tried both setups. I had problems with dropping the chain when I used the front derailleur to try and keep it on. I fixed that by using a pliers to squash the cage and make it a little narrower. The problem with that set up was that I got some rubbing when in the biggest and smallest cogs. I have since switched to the guards and they don't drop the chain or rub. I don't think the guards have any drawbacks other than cost.

I use a front derailleur and havent had problems. I just lock it in place with the stop screws and slide it down real low over the ring and it works great for me

What about a big outside ring with the teeth ground off and a product such as the Jumpstop or something similar on the seat tube?
