I also am partial to the Empella's, Steelman's, recently the Fort foco CX they have good discounts on previous year models and the titanium Sibex frames, they offer good value with Ti.
Just for kicks, my Graham Weigh was custom via www.deesidecycles.com and I bought an older model Colnago off ebay for a decent price.

Bam, what do you think of the giant CX frame/fork 2003? I presume? Looking at that or a 2003 JTS frame/fork....

I like it, but it does give me an odd feeling when riding it. I always feel like I am in a very aggressive position even though I have it set up as close to my other bikes. It always feel like I`m in attack mode with a rather forward position. The handling is fairly quick and turns on a tight radius. The ride is stiffer then the S-works, which rides like butter, but it isn`t overly stiff or jarring. It really is more of a race bike and not an all day/commuter bike. I guess I have to say it feels like Giants TCR line, always ready to sprint and attack. A carbon seatpost will be the next upgrade vs the Ti post I have now. If your looking for a race bike then it maybe what you want. If you want all day comfort then look elsewhere.

Seven Tsunami ti softtail and Serotta Hors Categorie ti softtail. I use the Seven for general riding and the Serotta for "agressive" riding similar to how I would ride my MTB.

Trek XO - 1.

Lots of upgrades. The latest is Tektro Cross Levers and an ITM bar (thanks to Buffalosorrow).

Schweet....

Did you buy the frame and then build up or start with the stock bike? I would love to get rid of some of the older parts and get some new ones... Working on it...

Oh and I have new 105 STI levers on there too...

I got lucky on Ebay, it came relatively complete! Ultegra drivetrain with bar cons (pretty neat once you get used to it). I had to change the pedals to the old fashion platforms, never got into the clip-ons.
Curious about the Rolfs, how do they perform in the trails?

They're the Rolf Vectors... (bottom of the barrel).

But they work AMAZINGLY. I use this bike on the same trails as my mtb when I get bored or need to change things up and also ride them on the road, and I've had no problems. They definitely take a licking and keep on ticking. Only slightly out of true after a winter of serious beat downs....

So I like the wheels.

Cool that you got it off of eBay... I don't think I'll ever get used to Barend shifters....

Must consider getting a pair one day, whether they be Rolfs, Bontragers, or even the Shimano set.
Never had STI, so I never had anything to compare to except for the down tube shifters. If you convert to bar ends, I think you will like them. On the plus side, I don't have to worry about expensive STI shifters breaking on big impacts.

True dat.

I just replaced a pair of RSX STI for 105's... Had to do a bit of hunting to find 8 speed sti's...

The Bontragers look very niiiiiiceeee.

unless you are featherweight and have a light handling touch these wouldn't be strong enough for cross. I'm 230 and demo'd bikes with both and I could noticably feel flex in the wheels sprinting on pavement.

I am 155lbs & I hope that these low spoke count wheelsets would work for me.
My CX is mainly for commuting & light trails, which happen to be on the way to work too! I get the best of both worlds. On the weekends,...

I heard the same thing about the Mtn version of the Race Lites... I've been running a pair of them for a while without a hitch... And I'm about 190... And I definitely do not treat my bikes lightly... But definitely to each his own... Anything with a low spoke count won't be as strong as a 32 spoke or 36 spoke... But it's all about personal preference...

Agreed.
The first CX bike I recall looking at was a Bianchi Axis 2001, I believe, & it was equipped with Shimano R535's & I thought it was the coolest looking thing around with the Bianchi colour scheme of that particular year. The downside was that the bike was not available in Canada back then. I think the Axis is equipped with low spoke count Alex wheelset this year & is available in Canada.
I think that started my curiosity for CX'ers with a low spoke count wheelset. I figure if the manufacture puts them on, it should work for it's intended purpose.
Then again, Ford made the Edsel, right?

is put light wheels on bike to drop overall weight. look how many stock sub 30 lb "freeride bikes" (Specialized for example) come with Mavic 221's to keep bike sub 30 lb. aero wheel, low spoke reduces weight and stiffens wheel at the rim (aero) but may lack torsional rigidity. A radial spoke wheel is stiff vertically but will have side flex, why crit racers rarely use radial front wheels as they tend to wash in hard corners or sprints, wheel flexes and forces your turn wider. But on a note, I just built a 32 spoke 3x Velocity fusion that is quite swank!
Don't trust the MFRsnwbdrhoon
Jul 12, 2003 3:53 PM
they definitely do it to lower weight and for the fact that they're COOL.

but i stand by my assessment: Rolf Vectors will stand up to pretty much anything. I said the same for my Btrager Race Lite mtb wheels and Rolf Propel mtb wheels. Low spoke count but I beat these wheels bad and they are still very true.

it seems in essence the Btrager Race Lite road wheels are similar to Rolf Vectors....

give it a try. get a pair for cheap out of eBay or the classifieds. WCS: you have a set of race wheels or road wheels when you're spanking the roadies.
Will give them a try!arctic hawk

Thanks for all the info! I will definitely make it a point to get a set & will post an update once I get my hands on them & give it a go.
Now the fun really begins, what to buy, Bontragers Race Lites, Shimano 540's, Vector Comps, choices, choices, choices... Will depend upon the almighty dollar & how much I have available for the cause, so to speak.

I just can't stop riding this bike. Did 40 miles of off-road riding yesterday. The bike handles and climbs great. I definitely recommend Curtlo if a custom steel frame is what you need.
