Selcting the right size cross bike - HELP!!!!K-Stinque
Jun 17, 2003 11:37 AM
I've been mountian biking for about 12 years and have only recently started road riding. I'm thinking about selling my road bike and getting a cross bike as I'd like a bike that I can use both on fire roads and on the road. I have NO idea were to start looking as far as size is concerned. My road bike is a hand-me-down - I beleive its a 52 cm (measures 20.5 inches from center of bottom bracket to middle of top-tube) and because it's the first and only road bike I've ever ridden I have nothing to compare it to as far as fit goes - though it seems to feel slightly "long". My moutain bike is 18" with a 30" standover height. Oh yeah, I'm 5'10" with a measured 32" inseam.

Can anyone give me an idea where to start looking as far as size goes? Remeber, I'm not going to be using this for actual cyclo-cross racing - just road and fire road riding, if that makes a difference.

best recommendation you can get is to ride a few. I know they're hard to find, but it would be well worth your time. They are sized differently from most bikes. Ex. I ride a 58 Trek road bike, but a 54 IF Planet Cross and it's almost too big. Then again, I ride a 56 in a Fuji. It just depends on how they are measured. BB are higher on the cross bikes in most cases.

Thanks for your help, Mosovich. In general, though, for mostly road and fire road use, do I want it to fit more like a mountain bike or a road bike?
