which rear der.???(6 posts)

which rear der.???lookin for help

I managed to get my poprad build complete for by march ands have been merrily pounding my way around the backroads of SE Ohio for a couple moinths now. As I was buying parts I jkust could not decide on what rear deraileur to use. Because my LBS had a sora group handy for a good price I went with the brakes, cranks, and front der. but could not deal with the rear. While the sora stuff is ok, it has functioned pretty well I need to change the back end. I put a shimano Deore mountain bike der. on the rear (not an lx or xt) - but it just seems to suck. It seems so clunky that I want to upgrade but can't decide between a road or mtn rear der. I have been spending most of the time on gravelly or poorly asphalted roads. Not much singletrack or mud. SHould I just go ahead and get the xt or will the road mechanicals hold up to all the grit? Maybe it is just the diffennce between the 8 speed cassette vs the 9 speed I am used to on my Fisher?

go on ebay, find the 1997-1998 XT 8 speed rear der. IMHo it was the best der. Shimano ever made. I bought a pair on ebay for 40 bucks so I have back up. Works on my cxer just dandy. Seriously this is the route. use road if you aren't going to be too gunky or nasty and plan on using only a 27 cog at the biggest.

Although I cannot disagree with your suggestion of using an XT RD...I have been using an Ultegra SGS RD with an 11-34 cassette without any problems. I know of at least one other who uses the very same setup and has had not ill effects from it either. Both of us routinely use our cross rigs on obscene single track outings.

Food for thought,
