I recently decided to ride my CX bike in a mountain bike race due to the nature of the course: 26 mile loop with a huge grueling climb and then another 12+ mile flat/rolling section on gravel/loggin roads. I figured that any time I lost on the single track sections I could make up on the roads.

Guess what? Not only was I cruising the road sections, but there is something gratifying about yelling "coming through!" to guys on full on suspension rigs as I passed them on the techy sections in the drops! Better yet, the full fenders that people were snickering at at the start line proved to be my best friends on the wet and rainy course.

I had a blast and finished better than I ever had in the past! Just thought I would pass on the giddiness - If I could only have one bike I know which one I would choose!

The Spring Thaw in southern Oregon. It is my token racing event of the year. I have friends and family that help put the race on, so it is always fun to participate in.

I'm riding an Alpine Design CX rig that I really dig - 853/zona with Ultegra (30-38-44 triple) and Ult/OP wheels. Oh yeah, and I love the Nitto dirt drops! With full fenders on, its my all-season do-it-all adventure machine.

I prefer the tighter handling of my cross bike in the singletrack. It took me a while, I kept hitting my shoes on my front tire when pedalling through tight turns. Then I discovered speed!!! Makes all the difference in the world.

By the way, congrats on your race. I've been thinking about doing the same thing in the fall, we'll see...

2 guys I race with won their respective classes (Elite and Sport) in their respective age groups in a 3 race mtb series on cx bikes. beat them not only once but over a whole series.

Thanks for compliments all - the training actually paid off this year!

The other cool thing about riding the CX bike on the trails is that once I do get back on the mountain bike I find myself picking way better lines and feeling a lot more fluid on the trail.

have a good weekend !
