what to look for in a 'cross wheelsetBecky

My dad is interested in building or buying a bike to replace his aging road bike. He would like to be able to ride some trails back to his favorite fishing streams (nothing too technical), but still have a bike set up for road riding. I'm leaning towards building him a 'cross bike with a couple of wheelsets for swapping as the conditions warrant. I'm not concerned with a road wheelset- just about anything will be ok in that department- but I'm not very sure about what kind of wheels he would need for riding off-road. Nothing too fancy or lightweight here....just a dependable wheelset. Any advice on what to look for? Thanks in advance!

look for veed rim (stronger, clears mud better and works like a rudder in the slop) and a decent hubset. look into some velocity aerohead or deep vees laced to 105 or Ultegra hubs. The old standby is the Mavic O/P to eithr hub. the cxp Mavics work well too.
