I'm recovering (rehab) from ACL surgury (B-Ball), I need to get some gears for my CX bike, I don't really want to triple it, but was wondering about putting an MTB
cassette(12-32 or 13-34) with a MTB rear derailleur. Will this work ok and give me uphill gears so I don't strain my knee? I currently run DA shifters,Raceface cranks(38/48)
DA 11-25 cassette, DA rear derilleur.
Thanks

I did this just to make my CX a little more trail friendly.

Swapped a 12-34 XT Cassette for my old 12-25 DA and added an XTR rear derailuer to handle the larger cassette. If you go greater than a 27 tooth cog you will need to replace the rear der. BTW-front is a 38/48 Ritchey crankset.

Works fantastic, shifts great in concert with my ultegra shifters and I'm not shying away from trails I would have otherwise had to walk. It will definitely give you the wider range of gears you are looking for.

Thanks TCN!
Did you have to put on a longer chain?

Sorry, forgot about that.

You will definitely need a longer chain. Anytime you replace a cassette it's a good idea to put a new chain on.

This was a few months ago (December) but at the time frankford cycles had the best prices i could find on all three.

Yes run 48/36 by 11-32 (8 speed) with MTB rear der. as well.
works fine, only issue is chain slap. get some sort of chain watcher if you plan on racing at all. When you put the bike down hard in a race after portage, chain sometimes will fall off.
