Stem extension question Terry Hi-road?(1 post)

Stem extension question Terry Hi-road?Auriaprottu

I'm in the process of building up a compact hybrid frame (Specialized Crossroads- the straight tubes, not curved)to use as my primary bike, and I want to use a drop bar. The 90mm reach on my current stem is just a bit more than I'd like, so I'm considering buying a Terry Hi-road stem (Salsa Bell-lap bar, 82mm reach). The Terry's reach is 65mm. I know this is a subjective thing, but is 65mm just "too" short? I'm used to an ATB bar/stem with 90-100mm reach. The frame is perfect for me with an ATB bar, but I'm set on drops. I really just need some input on handling with short-reach stems. I plan on riding the hoods only, so the real-life reach shouldn't be that different from what I'm used to. If I buy the Terry, I'll cut the quill to lower the stem- reach is the issue, not height. Thanks in advance.
