RACE REPORT: Redwood Park CX, Humboldt, CA,Big-foot
Jan 27, 2003 2:03 PM
Race #3 of the 5-race Redwood Cyclocross Series was Saturday in Redwood Park, right next to Humboldt State University. Weather was about perfect --- it had rained most of the previous day, but no rain at all for the race.
The riders loved the 1.25-mile course, which had one 2 paved climbs, two run-ups, 2 sets of barriers (plus to log hurdles) and two fun sections of singletrack in the forest.

In the 1-hour experts race, the smart money was on local rider Humberto Faria, who indeed did lead most of the race. Meanwhile Keith DeFiebre from Montery was biding his time. DeFiebre had been running about 5th most of the race, but powered up his engine at about minute 40. After catching Faria in the closing minutes of the race, DeFiebre pulled away, eventually finishing a full 50 seconds ahead.

That's Keith in the photo. Yeah, some of our barriers are a little different in Humboldt County.

Our next event is in Eureka at Redwood Acres Speedway, February 22. That event uses the 3/8-mile paved motor speedway oval, the infield and the grassy hills surrounding the stadium. Good Stuff!

The Redwood Cyclocross Series Final is March 15 at Almquist Lumber Mill in Arcata on a course that runs through and around the mill and on the singletrack trails between the mill and the Mad River. The finals is double points and the day ends with series awards, a major scwhag fest (1 raffle ticket for every series point earned), a BBQ and beer keg (Bigfoot Pale Ale!).

Yeah, got a class for mono-coggers.
Nice singletrack!Big-foot

The city let us use this new section of singletrack in the park. We'll be using some more of it for Bigfoot 1 (June 7) and for the 12 Hours of Humboldt (June 28).

In 7th was 46 year old attorney Tim Wykle, who won the first race of the Series with a wire-to-wire lead.
The grass hill behind Tim is one of the pit areas for the 12Hours of Humboldt. On June 28 that grass will be covered with tents, EZ-Up, lawn chairs and BBQs!

This section was a big sketchy on a 'cross bike. 'Berto went down a 1/2 second after this shot. We'll be using this at Bigfoot 1 and at the 12 Hours of Humboldt
More Racing in Redwood Park, Humboldt ! !Big-foot

This last one of 'Berto shows some more of Redwood Park. It's such a cool place to hold a race. It's right in town next to Humboldt State, just 2 minutes from the highway. It has paved parking, real bathrooms, BBQs, picnic tables,a kids' playground, a great big ol' lawn to use for team pits and 650 acres to race on!

If anyone knows of any eastcoast races, please post 'em.
I am begining to become depressed. The race images are great. Course looks like some serious fun.

I still ride everyday in the new england chill, but racing is another story. I like it more.

same here in SoCal. am going through a definite withdrawl. Then again this 80 degree weather doesn't feel much like cross anyhow. Did a road workout this AM in shorts and a SS Jersey.
hope we get a cold spell.
trade some weather?buffalosorrow

For the past two weeks or so it has not climbed above 15 C. The northern portion of the hudson river began to freeze. Although today is was 32C, the ice broke up and came downstream. I have never seen anything like it. It took me two hellish hours to get home, I bike and take a ferry. The ferry service was disrupted, and will be for some time (Ice + ferries= trouble). I suppose I will have to resort the the packed trains and a long underground commute. Now that brings a tear....
