Hey guys... Hope everyone has a nice holiday.

I'm gonna change out my shifting cables this weekend, and I was wondering if the little adjuster my bike came with is really necessary.

It seems to have scratched a little paint on the frame, and I kind of just think it's ugly.

I don't imagine it's a must-use type thing, because I've seen plenty of bikes w/o them. Is it just a "nice to have" sort of thing or what?

My Surly is set up without the cable adjuster on the down tube cable stop. If you remove it you won't be able to adjust the derailer on the fly (something I find I never do).

These work very well. Your LBS should carry them (under the Jagwire brand); they're about $9/pr.
