29" wheels?helton

Has anybody tried any of the 29" wheels that some mountain bikes are using? Would they work on a cyclocross frame that uses disc brakes? Just wondering if there would be any advantage to using them..I am planning on building a cyclocross bike up soon when I can find the right frame.....Steve.

29 wheels are 700 c, or the same as road wheels. running a 2-9er rim (WTB) is like running a heavy duty cross rim. yes will work, and yes they'd work with discs. use a minimum of 32 spoke (36 preferred) especially if you are larger. Also go with brass nipples. advantage would be strength, disadvantage would be weight.

A 29"er that is...The wheels I use are built with something that it seems you're intereseted in. SRAM 9.0sl disc hubs, laced 32 times with brass nipples and Wheelsmith DB spokes to Salsa Delgado Cross rims. I've had the bike since March of this year and have put it through its paces. I'd have to say so far that the set up I'm using has worked fantastic. for those who'll ask, I'm also 6'5" and 'bout 225lbs. 36 holes might be overkill, but then I'm not really all that hard on wheels, someone who is hard on wheels MAY like 4 more spokes.

Sounds good, but I believe I will go with the 36 hole wheels..How many mountain bikes have you seen with the 29"er's?....Steve.

there's 3(other then my 2) of them(town of 45,000 or so) with more to come. The Surly Karate Monkey has quite a few folks in my hood itchin' to get one. Other wise I've seen quite a few, mostly customs though with some fisher throuwn in for good measure(obivously). I won't be going back to 26" unless I'm forced too.
