First 'cross race on Sat... What a blast!outofthesaddle

Did first race on Sat in Northern Cal at Coyote Point. What a blast! Listening to some good advice from Eager Beagle, Climbo, Wheelz, Manicmtbr, TWD and the rest of the board, I rode the fist race on my hardtail mtn bike.

My goal for the race was to finish (no DNF!) and to be covered with more mud than blood. I didn't think that 30+ mins of leg/lung searing pain would be so much fun. There were loose wood chips and some sand so it wasn't the worst course to have a mtn bike. Probably rode half the race unclipped trying to get clipped back in! Even went down once on the last lap but finished sore knee and all. Overall 9th of 25.

I'm looking for the next race - I can't believe I waited so late in the season to do my first one.

Thanks for all of the advice!
another one hooked on 'cross - well done !! nmclimbo

9th in your first race? on an MTB? get a cross bike, and you will fly. no one will know what hit them.

money tree in your yard? I like the dream X but they don't take very big tires. Rather have a Ridley (got one) or Empella.

It's realy great that you loved your first cross race. However, Coyote Point is not your typical cross course. Few courses are 75% sand pit and/or wood chips. That being said, the MTB was a good choice for that course.

I got that idea. I was nervous about running 26 x 2.1. I had been looking for 26 x 1.5 but decided to suck it up and run the first race with the big tires. Worked out pretty well - especially on the beach.

Looking forward to riding different courses (on a 'cross bike)!

seriously, I will likely be getting one. in a few years. some other short person has to buy my current frame first, though. perhaps one of the local juniors.
