cross race: Hudson Mills, Dexter MIweiwentg

they're trying to put natural obstacles in cross races nowadays. last race, the natural obstacles were two logs, the first of which could be easily bunny hopped (or ridden over), and the second of which ... well, I crashed when I pre-rode the course and tried to hop it. not good.
the natural obstacles in the Hudson Mills race were *(#%&(*#@%&)(#%*ing sand pits. here's the first; you could kind of cut corners on the next two.

this lady is Ann Groefvert. she saved me from being a complete and total doofus. you see, I forgot my shorts (something ALWAYS goes awry during my cross races). she lent me a spare pair.
Ann is a great racer, and she has a very, very nice bike (Bianchi).

this was taken at the last set of barriers, which were going uphill. I probably need to work on the technique.

this is after the second set of barriers. the first half of the course was fast, open, and hilly - real roadies' terrain. the second and third sets of barriers were in the technical second half, which contained that #(*$^(#*%&(ing sandpit. the maniac who designed the course put those barriers perhaps 500 meters apart.

this is me, coming out of the last barrier. if it looks like it hurts, you are correct.

this is Danielle Scaglione. she just got a Giant TCR 2 ... and later, decided to try cyclocross, so she got a used bike. it's a freaking Colnago, for heaven's sake! I'm so jealous! don't know what model; definitely not a Dream Cross.

this is Dave Koesel. aside from being a very nice guy, Dave is a monster. unfortunately, he broke his hub flange.

this is Jonathan Card, sponsored by Cane Creek and Saturn Ohio. he's also the leader of the Tailwind series ... but has yet to win a race.

end result: I got something like 7th. this course really favored me: lots of climbing, not too technical. I also got second in my age group ... but there were 2 people in my age group for this race. I stayed upright in that *(#&%@*%&(@#*%&ing sand pit 5 out of 6 laps. I remember saying that my first cross race was the worst 45 minutes of my life. that's incorrect, THIS one was the worst 45 minutes of my life.
the good side: the tailwind races always have dounts and cider after the race. there's a lucky draw. since lots of people leave early, the odds are really quite good.
unfortunately, most of the clothes will not fit small people. does anyone want to trade anything for a pair of Pearl Izumi knee warmers?

Have you made it to any of the KISS-Cross races on the West side of Michigan? They are a training series nothing to serious but, a lot of fun (aka torture). It's great to see some pictures from MI on the board. The next KISS race is November 17 at Manhatten Park in East Grand Rapids.

hmm ... I raced at Grand Rapids two weeks ago, but I don't think that was a KISS race. it's pretty far for us Eastern MI folks. I'm going to another Tailwind race next week, at Bloomer Park. it's closer, I'm doing pretty well in the series standings for my age group, and I have exams coming...

Actually, that was a K.I.S.S. 'Cross race. It was kind of unique in the fact that it was the only race in the series facilitated by Tailwind. The other races have been/will be lower-key and lower-$$$ (only $10 to enter).

By the way...nice photos. I'm the guy who parked next to you at the Riverside Park race and loaned your friend some tire levers (I was on a single speed Surly Cross-check).

For more information on the K.I.S.S. 'Cross races, check out the K.I.S.S. 'Cross Home Page.

Yeah, that was me. I got 16/19 in class (not stellar, but it was my first CX race). I was also geared a little too high (42:18) on my SS. I have a 20T rear cog on order through my LBS, but it's on backorder so...

I'm going to be riding my more appropriately geared Soulcraft SS MTB in this Sunday's CX race. I'll have 36:16 gearing on it, so it should be a little easier on my legs.

Good meeting you. If you get a chance to get over for one of the last two K.I.S.S. 'Cross races, say "hi". Of course, it won't be hard for me to spot you...you don't see Tom Teesdale frames everyday : )

I'm in West Michigan (Ann Arbor Velo Club), and Grand Rapids is a little far :/
we'll see, though. good luck at your race!
