Soon a longer 'cross season in the USeurochien

From a report posted on cyclocrossworld.com, it looks like USA Cycling is ready to make changes to the calendar for next year's cx season. Nationals will be held in January starting in 2004, to align the US with Europe (a.k.a. the Rest of the World). Some Juniors and U23s might not welcome this as they might have to race in the higher cat for the season depending on when their birthday is, but for the rest of us I think it's good news and it brings the prospect of a longer, more appropriate 'cross season in terms of weather, making it finally a true winter cycling discipline. Maybe we'll have Christmas and New Year's races!

I would much rather race 'cross in Jan/Feb California rain showers than in the current 70-80 fall weather. It seems like we should have fall mtb races in Sept-Oct around these parts and CX races from November-Feb. Then again, it's not like I'm stepping up to organize my own race series. .
As far as juniors go...Wayne

they might as well be racing a year up during the season as well since US Nationals are run by the UCI age rules already. Moving nationals until after the New Year won't change anything for them.

it's kinda of unclear, but I thought I remember at last year's nationals they used the UCI rule that juniors and U23's would have to have followed at worlds which judges their racing age to be that on Dec. 31st of the year of that world champs. So last year's riders racing age would have been whatever their age is on Dec. 31st of 2002. This year's rider's ages would be whatever they are on Dec. 31st of 2003, since this will be the 2003 cyclocross world champs in Feb.
Not really relevant to most of us unless USA cycling starts issuing cyclocross specific licenses (which might not be a bad idea).
