Bad News for Rockford/Illinois CX Fanslnin0

I just got off the phone with Larry Swanson who puts together the Rockford CX series. The park district they have used for the past 5 years is no longer going to allow the races on (unpaved) park grounds due to some outside pressure. Having lost the venue Larry had no option but to cancel the series this year.

He did say they are trying to work out something which would allow them to hold the Dec. 1 event but as of now they have nothing concrete.

THAT BLOWS!!!! This really ruined my day/CX season.

If that's the case, the only other race in the area this season is that crappy one in Lake Villa.

For the rest of you in other parts of the country, consider yourselves very fortunate to have your CX venues and series.

I've been training for that series for months. This is a real punch in the gut.

Apparently, he's the one who's been working directly with Larry. Jan is going to give him a message to call me back.

Alex, hopefully, between the two of us, we can get to the bottom of this.

Jan still hasn't called me back, but when she does I'll get Ron's number and call him as well. I called Larry's home earlier and left a message asking that he call me.

Isn't this a damn good lesson on how fragile these things are, and how much we depend on a couple of guys working like dogs to put them on. The president of the Northbrook Velodrome just stepped down, and when the committed got a look at the work he had been doing all by himself, they split his old job into 7 new individual positions.

Anyway, back to Rockford. You call Ron, I'll call Ron, and we'll see what's up and what we can do.

When it comes to bike racing, Illinois must be one of the most backwards states around! I was planning on trying one of the races in November. I even traded e-mails with Larry and volunteered to distribute some of his flyers to the bike shops in Chicago...

Any info about the Lake Villa Race on the web?

Neither Ron Butler nor Jan Davis of the Rockford park district knows of any cancellation. The fact that Ron Butler, head guy and apparently the fellow working most closely with Larry, has not heard of any cancellation would lead me to believe that the races are still on as planned.

What's the deal? Was this a joke?

I can sympathize with getting your races cancelled - about a quarter of the collegiate road races in the Midwest conference got cancelled this year (basketball game, flooding). best of luck!
