Since first race reports seem to be the order of the day, I'll throw in a run down of my first two CX races.
I did my first ever CX race on Friday night. It was a night race held at a sports park under lights. There was a pretty small turnout (13 riders in the Bs). I didn't know what to expect, so I started off at the back of the pack, and for some reason didn't really kick it into gear for a lap or two. The first runup was a bottleneck, I came to a dead stand still. The leaders were long gone by the time I really settled into any kind of pace. After a few laps, I dropped the guys around me, but there wasn't really anyone within sight in front of me. I kinda just raced alone for the rest of the race. I crashed twice coming into the same barrier on different laps. My foot got stuck in the pedal both times. Bad combination of dismounts on wet/frozen grass followed with dry dusty runups. Ended up finishing 9th out of 13. I didn't get lapped, but ended up lapping three of the guys behind me. I think I would have done better if I had put the hammer down at the start and stayed up towards the front.
My second race was on Saturday. Even smaller turnout (6 or 7 riders in the Bs). This course was even more interesting. Well, I'd say it was more of a mountainbike course than anything. Most of the course was singletrack, no grass, no pavement, most of the barriers were natural log barriers, with three long runups per lap. Most of the course was fairly soft and sandy as well, and the singletrack was rough and rooty. Took a different approach this time, and jumped into the lead on the first lap. I ended up getting passed on the second lap when I screwed up on a re-mount and nearly came to a stop. Never did catch the leader, but stayed in second the remainder of the race. It was definitely a tough course, and it hurt alot.
So, I guess I'm hooked now. I'm planning on racing again next Saturday.
