|i am flat broke. student and just blew my cash on my new road bike. i want to race cross this season. can i race on my mountain single speed? what gear ratio would i want to ride? i don't care about winning- just having fun...|

|it's all about fun, so do it. Depending on the course I would run a little bigger than 2:1. My old cross bike was a SS and I ran a 38:17 usually. Don't forget to take bar ends off if you have them on.|

|You probably won't win. But you WILL have fun, and you WILL be a crowd favorite.
Heard at a race last year: (1st lap) "Hey look at that freak on a single speed!" (2nd lap) "Woohooo. Go Freak, Go." (3rd lap -- a crowd of 9 or 10 chanting) "FREAK! FREAK! FREAK!..."
I keep telling myself I'm going to try it one race this year. But, man, CX is hard enough already.
