this will be used for a mix of road riding and some offroad, but it seems to be spec'd more for the pavement. Any feedback would be helpful!

Don't get the one with the headshock! Had it, hated it!

I'm looking at the rigid one, but what kind of problems did you have with the headshock? To me that looks like a super sexy set up, if it works. I suspect problems with the lock out. Was that it?
Owner's manual says lubricate Headshock bearings every 40 hrs !teamsloppy

The HeadShock looks like a good idea. I am looking for a CX bike also.

However, I took a look at the owners' manual. The recommended maintenance for changing shock oil and lubricating the needle bearings (what?) is kind of intense.

http://www.cannondale.com/bikes/tech/pdfs/00HeadShok_Manual.pdf

On page 3:
"The oil in HeadShok hydraulic damping cartridges should be replaced every 80 hours of riding,..."

And even scarier is:

"The needle bearings (which provide the smooth travel of the HeadShok suspension system) inside all mountain and cyclocross HeadShok forks should be lubricated every two months or 40 hours of riding."

40 hours is every 17 days for me.

It's possible that this maintenance frequency is exaggerated by some lawyer for liability reasons.
