How do you size CX frames?cantona

This has probably been asked several times before. I'm looking to purchase a used cyclocross bike. Are there any general rules in terms of frame size relative to my road bike set up? I've heard that it's best to use the same size as your road bike to ensure that you are using the same muscles. I've also heard that I should get something that is smaller by 1 cm in the seat tube and top tube. Lastly, any guidelines on standover height?

I use the same standover height as my road bike, but I lower my seat about 1 cm to help with transition. One small note: I ride a compact frame geometry on my road bike and traditional frame geometry on my cx bike.
