Which Top Mounted Brake Levers?(6 posts)

Which Top Mounted Brake Levers?Fred the Cross Poser

Hey folks -

I need advice/opinions about which top mounted brake levers to get. The brake levers will be used with Campy Ergo. BTW, it looks like the bar wrap will need to be undone to get access to the brake cable.

Thanks in advance!

Well, I got the Paul's because I thought they were all pretty much the same and, as somebody suggested here, I should support my local CNCer. I wish I had gotten the Empella's because the Paul lever don't have integrated barrel adjusters. Either way, you do have to remove the bar tape and levers so you can slide the top mounts one. I don't know what's so hard about making them with a hinge, though I guess they would weigh a little more that way.

I just ordered a set of the Spooky levers from; UPS tracking says they arrive tomorrow, so I'll know a bit more then. These incorporate a hinge so that it's not necessary to remove the tape & levers to install them. It's still looks like it will be a somewhat fussy process, but we'll see. They've also got a barrell adjuster on them.

I'm not entirely clear on the clamp diameter; I called before ordering and the woman who answered the phone looked at the Spookys and at a set of IRDs, and told me that they looked like the 26.0 clamp diameter (bulge portion of the bar). This morning (after I ordered) Stu Thorne e-mailed me back to say that the clamp was the smaller type, which fit on the narrower, non-bulge portion of the bar. I'll know tomorrow, and don't have particularly strong feelings either way, but if you have strong preferences, you may want to go with the IRD Interceptors, which include a shim so that you can mount them on either portion of the bars.

And for what it's worth, seems to have knocked $5 off the Spookys since I ordered them last week.

I have the froggleggs with Ergo's they work great. They are the only ones I've ever used so can't really compare.

not quite as strong as I would've liked but not bad. My bars need to be a tad wider to get a bit more leverage and improve performance.

Also cyclocross world has a good protocol for installing them.

Good luck,

Anyone try Redline?Fred the Cross Poser

Hey folks -

Thanks for the advice replies! I just saw the Redline levers in the Excel Catalog - they look a little beefier than some of the others out there - anyone try them?

Thanks in advance!
