Bontrager cx sizing? Desirability?(7 posts)

Maybe I'm too retro, but I'm interested in getting a Bontrager cx. Used to love my Bontrager mtn bike, hence the question: what is the proper size? They used to be sized small - I fit the large although I'm 5'11". Is the same true with the cx bikes? Am I nuts to want one of these? I have a great Fuji cx, Genius tubing, etc, comfy ride, perfect road/hardpack bike for me, don't race, or train, only recreation. Opinions from more experienced riders appreciated. Thanks.

Very nice bikes, all Santa Cruz built (no BonTrekgers)and excellent craftsmanship. I've seen quite a few and heard no complaints, geometry and overall design is pretty cross-specific, reasonably light and I think there are rack mounts and bottle cages for versatility. I've thought of snatching a few of the ones I've seen pop up on ebay, but I've already got two nice cross bikes.

You're right about the sizing, they run small. That's the Bontrager way. When you find one, don't bother with the S/M/L crap, just go by top tube length and you'll be fine.

I believe there's one in the bike section of the SF craigslist.com right now. Check it out...

Seamus,

Thanks for the reply. Based on your info I'll look for a large, thanks for the tip on Craigslist.

I sold a med that was too small for me. I know sizing is very subjective, so this may not apply to you. I am 5' 11" with 32" inseam. It really seemed like I needed a long stem and the drops were pretty low in comparison to the seat.

I had a red/black Santa Cruz with a Kinesis alloy fork. High quality welds and fit & finish. I just wish it had been a large. There have been a few passing through the classified sections here. Here are the specs for my old bike:

center bb - tt 19.75 inches
center bb - seat post binder 21 inches
effective tt 22.5 inches
stand over @ seat post 30.75 inches @ headset 32.5 inches
center bb to ground 11.5 inches

Eric,

Thanks so much for your info. I'm also 5'11" with a 32" inseam and had similar issues with a Bontrager mtn bike several years ago. The large at the time fit well, guess the same applies to the cx frames. Thanks again.

I'm a huge bontrager fan. I have a Race Lite and a Road Lite. So I really wanted a CX to add to the stable. However, based on the specs, the top tube seemed to be too long for me especially for CX racing. I would've ridden a small, so for me there was no option to go smaller. I had a opportunity to pick one up at one time, but passed based on the long top tube. Check the specs before you decide on a size.

Also, the earlier CXs were made with a striaght blade Steelman fork which is much better than the Tange fork that was used later.

The only downside to a Bontie CX that I could see would be the sloping top tube which would leave less room for shouldering the bike, but if you're not racing it, that's a non-issue.

Good luck finding one.

Thanks, Greg. I saw the same site and share your concerns re top tube length. Had a Race Lite as well, loved it. At some point I guess I'll just have to take a chance if I can find one. Thanks again.
