Poll-What wheelset do you CX on?kamss

i'm currently figuring out what parts to buy for my first cx bike. i'm going to build it ss. i have a sun ringle pro elite road wheelset, i'm wondering if it's gonna take the abuse well (i'll probably ride it road alot). it's 28H radial up front and 32 hole 2x rear with 14/15g spokes. i'm curious to see what everyone else uses.
cheers.

That's what the previous owner had on it. Not a bad wheelset. Pretty light, yet durable. When the time comes to replace it/upgrade, I'll do it right with a wheelset that has ceramic braking surfaces.

Just curious. My gunnar is 120mm, and I wonder if this is partly responsible for a few taco'd wheels I've had over the past few years.

Alex

I got these cheap so I can't complain about the price but the Sun build quality has been a little suspect. In 2k miles (80% urban commuter, 20% singletrack) I have broken three spokes on the drive side of the rear wheel. Sun customer support's solution was to relace the wheels in the opposite direction. They did not offer to take the rear wheel back (very frustrating).

To make a long story short I did get the rear wheel relaced with straight gauge spokes 3x. My spoke breakage problems have gone away. Looks like the rear wheel must have been built on a Monday ;-)...

As for the rest of the wheel specs...

- Hubs - Pretty bomberproof with the only flaw being the tendency for the locknut on the rear hub to loosen up (easily fixed with a wrench)... Great bearings.

- Rims - Seem to be light and strong. I am running 28 Front and 32 rear. The front has the original DB spokes and has held up well.

I am also running Sun-Ringle Disc-O-Tek's on my mountain bike. Once again after correcting the factory build they have been great.

Crappy build though. Never had so much trouble keeping a wheelset in true.

Try to make them last another month but a re-build is definitely in the works. The hubset is great, but the build makes it tough to comment on the OP's.

Mavic OP 32f/32r - one year, rear split open, rims very suspectable to dings and creases by rocks.
Ritchey Zero 28f/28r - one year, tacoed rear, rebuilt kept going out of true every other ride- re-spoked again and now ok
Ritchey Zero 24f/26r - 6 mos - perfect

I don't think this correlation proves causation. If so downhill MTBer's would be riding Rolf Urracos.
Bike 1 Running 32 spoke Hugi 130's w/ 15 G straight , 3x laced to Open Pro's and beat the tar out of them (and I'm a Clydesdale) and have to retrue every couple months
Bike 2 Ultegra 32 Spoke, w/ straight guage 15's 3x to Velocity Aeroheads.
want the bullet proof wheels, 36 spoke Woods to MAvic tandem wheels 3x 15 guage. You bend these and you need to reevaluate your riding style.

actually graphic designer. UCSD graduate so I have a science background by G.E., plus I have many lab rat friends from school.
Do love my biochem though (what I can remember) and dig that apoptosis. Do alot of work for Pharm companies as well. Who ya working for?

Some of the things you said sounded sorta like science geek speak. ie things I might say.

Spent half a dozen years pretending to be an academic scientist working on the role of oxidative stress in T and B cell development and tolerance AKA apoptosis. So it's a topic near and dear to my heart as well, or at least it used to be. Now I'm prostituting myself for the biggest of big pharma up on the hill.

What can I say, they are much better at indirectly supporting my cycling habit.

you working for Pfizer? are up on Torrey Pines? I'm going to be in Penasquitos this eve around 5. I have a friend who plays with the Pfizer hockey team. For an artist I got a ton of Geek in me. Having to do graphics for the Pharm giants keeps me up to date.

Sorry I didn't see this until this morning.

I commuted through Penesquitos last night, but didn't hit the preserve until about 5:30.

I would've been hard to miss yesterday. Bright red Jersey, big arse backpack on a beige IF with wobbly wheels. Perhaps we passed. Penesquitos was packed last night.

saw a guy on a cross bike, yelled your handle but he didn't respond. he appeared to be on a titanium bike. Ya can't miss me, I'm about 6'5" on either a bright red s-works or soon bright yellow ridley riding at puke pace usually. My name is matt in case ya see me. I drop in from Lopez Canyon (great singletrack) do a loop and climb back out to my office. How many days do you commute?
Probably wasn't me.TCN

It would be pretty hard to mistake my planet-x for ti. It's a sort of ugly as sin vanilla color and I think I would've remembered someone 6'5". I'll keep an eye out for you though.

I usually commmute MWF. This week was different since I did a long ride Sunday. Hence, Tuesday-Thursday routine. I'm getting old and find I enjoy my rides a bit more when I give my legs a day to recover in between. A true sign of age, well that combined with the realization that the top of my head can in deed become sun burned through the holes in my helmet..... but that's another story.

Have a good weekend.

I'll keep an eye out for ya. I think the guy I saw was probably a little younger. I usually take Monday off as I ride Sat and Sun (usually about 50-80 miles road each day or 50-80 Road and 20-25 MTB)
Try to commute T-Th (Road or Cx) but wed. is normal eve cx ride and sometimes friday I cx it easy and fun. This week was screwy for me as well. Kinda liked the th. crowd, fun to be out there amongst the throng of MTBers on the cx. I know the age thing as well. I try to take M and F off or just do a "recovery" spin on Friday. My biggest problem is forcing myself to ride slow on "rest" days.

Needed a cute title!
Before the drought mud ground down the OP's causing them to split
Rode over an icy puddle, broke through and jammed the Ritchey in a frozen rut - rear went straight, front went 90 degrees.

I am looking to build up a tubular set as well. I have record front hub 36h and chorus rear 32h, I just need to decide on rims. I am thinking the suns, velocity or old stock campy.

It's really bad dirt out here in So Cal. It's dried clay, so when it has no water it turns to brown talc, when wet it turns to clay that is impossible to ride through. It's usually covering round river stones which run havoc on your wheels, not a lot of open tacky dirt in the coastal zone, ya have to drive to the mtns 45 minutes east to find ego dirt as we call it out here. We get so used to riding bad, zero traction crap that we get in Loamy stuff and fly. The coastal stuff is hell on the wheels. Have to retrue constantly (every couple weeks) because ya just can't dodge the rocks when the rocks is all ya got.
