Dura Ace or Ultegra BB?(7 posts)

Dura Ace or Ultegra BB?Drupa

Received the D/A BB as a present. I have seen folks complain about the D/A, but I am not sure they are referring to the modern cartridge version. Are there problems with the newer units? I thought these the cartridges were sealed and adjustment free - am I wrong?

Should I exchange it for the Ultegra?

If you're talking about a current model splined DuraAce bottom bracket it should only fit DuraAce cranks. Ultegra and lower groupsets use a different spline pattern. (Unless I'm hugely mistaken).
road BBs use same splineweiwentg

in fact, they all use the same spline as the XTR unit. Xt and LX are the odd ones out.

Exchange it for an Ultegra, DA`s have a very short lifespan. I have a couple of timetrialers and trigeeks for customers and they have all switched to Ultegra bb`s when their DA`s developed play after 500-600 miles.

I noticed my D/A bb was super gravely after one winter of use, didn't care because I was getting a new frame though. I had it on my road bike for 2 years, when I got a new frame and attempted to transfer it over it was destroyed. It had no seals at all, probably explains the cup of water in my frame after long rides in the rain. The threads are also very weak, its not something you can take out often.

My ultegra has worked great, good seals keep the water and grit out, still turns smooth after tens of thousands of miles.

I've got close to 10,000 miles in 2 years on my current Ultegra BB with no issues.
