Cyclocross coversion questionsjulio

I've got a 10 year old Cannondale Criterium 3.0 bike I was considering converting to a crosser for fun and commuting. The chainstays are super short and I've only got like 4mm clearance between the tire and the front derailler (shim 600), this is with 700x23 Axial Pros on it. Are there any lower profile cross tires that would fit here? I don't want to dump a lot of money into it but was considering switching the downtube shifter to barends and upgrading the rear wheel and derailler to 9 speed (currently 7), its got a 130mm spread so it should fit. I plan on leaving the calipers on and not switching to V brakes. This isn't for any serious racing just fun. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I don't think you can get any cx tire to clear calipers and that gap to your seat tube. Your bike most likely will lack Canti braze ons so I don't think it's going to work for cx. There are some CX tires in about 28 which is going to rub both der. dropouts and brake. I honestly don't think it's gonna work.
