Last season I raced cross on converted road frame as a single speed and loved it. Only problem is that I'd really like to run bigger meat, nd can't due to clearance issues with the rear caliper brake (I will add a cross fork with canti for the front though). I thought this would not be possible, but a friend of mine just built up a city bike from scraps with some 37 cm Ritchey's that fit great with no clearance with the rear brake. He used a really old brake (no idea what it is) .....I need to find a rear caliper brake thet will fit @ 35mm cross tire on it. Anyone know of one??????

Shimano came out with a caliper brake earlier this year that has about a 57mm reach. It's either the R600 or R6500 (can't remember which). I couldn't find it on their website, but one of their reps told me it's out there.

Oops! It's a BR-R600, and it's part of the Ultegra group. Don't know about clearance on the sides, although the Shimano guy described it as "somewhat" wider than the standard calipers...

Try using a Shimano 600 or Suntour Superbe caliper from the 1980s. These work great on my old roadbike conversion.

Another trick your friend may have used is that he may have started with a bike that used 27 inch tires.
