Ultegra road STI's with shimano mountain components?ralbert

I'm thinking of building up a 29 inch mountain bike into a do it all cross/road/mountain bike. are shimano mountain and road components interchangeable? I'd like to use my road crankset with a mountain 12-34-ish cassette (and rear derailleur too, i guess).

any advice is appreciated,

ross

yes, they work fine. Was running Ultegra STI's w/ full XTR drivetrain (except an Ultegra 12-27 cassette) and didn't have any trouble. Warning, unless you have lots of disposable income or ride in dry conditions, save the STI's for your roadie and put on some bar ends. STI's die horrid deaths in dirt and you have to replace the entire set ($159 plus or minus) if a 10 cent part dies.
Campy ergos can be field dressed and replacement parts are available (what a concept) whilst our friends at Shimano find it more profitable to sell you whole shifter sets to replace small parts.
Bar Ends cost about $60 for Dura Ace and Brake levers can be had on ebay for 20-40 bucks and will last many abusive years.
I'm not a luddite about bar ends but would rather spend my money elsewhere
