|Sorry to be such a bother, but I'm greatly benefitting from the cyclocross brain trust here.
I'm building some wheels that I'll be able to use on my roadie and on my soon-to-be-campy 'cross bike. The hubs are 32h Daytona and the rims are the greay anodized Mavic OPs. The question is:
Should I consider straight gauge spokes for 'cross?
I weigh in about 162 right now, and I'm usually around 157 in mid-season [end of July]. All my wheels have DB'ed spokes, but would that be a strength issue off-road? I've been riding on 32h straight gauge OPs on the cross bike up to now, and rode pretty hard with no problems.
I like the idea of reducing a little rotating weight from the wheels with the DB spokes and, since they'll do double duty on my roadie, that would be a bonus. But am I being unrealistic?

|This is a great question! From what I've gathered off of some of these forums is that DB spokes allow you to build a STRONGER wheel for offroad.
The DB spokes build a wheel that has a little more flex to it. The flex helps to absorb the impact from offroad riding. A good example of this would be DT Alpine III spokes which are triple butted and the choice for downhill riders.

|Double butting moves the area of flex to where you want it, the middle. A spoke is most likely to fail at the nipple or the head. With a straight gauge spoke, the flexing generally occurs across the entire spoke, including the aforeentioned problem areas. A DB spoke will flex almost exclusively in the butted section which is where the spoke is least likely to fail.

|at your weight it shouldn't be a problem. I'm a Clydesdale and ride 14G Straight 3x. I can flex just about everything else, and this is not a good feeling.|

|I have weighed anywhere from 145-155 during cross season and I have put in two seasons on a set of wheels with non-eyeletted Velocity rims with DT double butted spokes. They have held up fine even for single track use. I recently built up my first wheel. It's a radial-laced front wheel with an OP rim, White Industries hub and DT DBs. It has been perfectly fine on all of my single track endeavors.
I say go for the DB spokes. They're even strong enough for BMX kids. The only time I've had problems with DBs is in a touring set up where the weight on the rear wheel from the panniers seemed to do all kinds of weird flexing to the rear end and the spokes ultimately gave out first.

|I have used 32 spoke straight gauge Mavic OP and 24-28 DB Ritchy Zero Dish wheels. I haven't noticed any difference. My 700x32 fat tires really dominate road feedback. I've bend most of them - bad luck on crashing seems to be the factor. The irony is my front DB 28H radial laced wheel is the only one that has never even gone out true!|| |
