I'd like to spend around $1000 or less, I'm about 5'8" and I can get semi good deals on trek, specialized, & giant through my club but I'm open to anything...

May 24, 2002 6:48 AM | | ...screaming deal on a 2001 Bianchi Volpe from my LBS. It's a great bike for my price range, which was similar to yours. STEEL frame (my main criteria), decent components (Tiagra/Deore), reasonably light (after swapping out the heavy-dog tires), versatile, and a good fit.
I also looked at Lemond and Surly who also had nice bikes for the money.
