Campy Hubs and Cross(8 posts)

Campy Hubs and Crossatpjunkie
May 8, 2002 1:22 PM
Have a set of record 9/10 Mavic Open Pros I'm thinking of using for cross. Anyone had any problems? Are the hub flanges strong enough? Please note: I'm a Clydesdale, Thanx

My Shamals are still perfectly true and the hubs as new after this winter. The only caveat, I was about 165#'s and ended up around 150#'s by the end.

is the Shamal Hub similar to the record? It's mostly the hub flanges that have me worried.

The hubs are HPW, not sure what that stands for. They are also pretty different.

looks a little different than the Record flanges, yours have that "bulb shape", I'll go check mine out for sure.

ps Nice Bike! are those bar levers and brakes Empellas?

I'm setting my Ridley up with Record 9 (I'd break the 10 chain) mixed with some Chorus and Athena I have laying around. I'll post pix when I'm done.

The levers are frogglegs, they are great. That was the first thing I found I missed when I got back on the road.
The brakes are Campy Record OR. I went through this exercise in building a completely Campy bike. I almost got an old Campy seat of E bay but when I was out bid at 100 bucks I caled it a day. The seat went for 200+.
Jeeeez these Campy guys are nuts.;)

the internals are, I believe, identical, but the flanges aren't the same. the Shamal hub is straight pull - can't say what HPW stands for, but it denotes a straight pull hub. this makes the damn thing inherently stronger (but then again, there are a lot less spokes).
