plan B is the XO1 - assuming the damn thing fits in terms of standover. wouldn't mind being just one inch taller ... but never mind. anyone out there had any problems with it? is the headset on the current model an integrated one?

I bought one of the last blue 01' models in September of last year. It's been a pretty solid bike and I put a load of miles on it - both on road and off. Unfortunately, I got hit by a car today (actually - I hit the car that turned into a driveway in front of me at 25mph. It looks like I'll be getting some couch time for the next few days - but that's another story).

As for the bike, I paid $800 for it which included swapping out the bar-end shifters for STI shifters/brake levers (I think the 02 version comes with these). For the money, it's been a good deal considering I've put over 2000 miles on it and beaten the crap out of it. The Sora components on it have held up remarkably well. I haven't had to replace derailleurs, hubs, shifters (til today), BB or anything else Shimano. They ain't pretty but they get the job done.

The stock Bontrager tires suck - but you would expect to replace these. I cut one on the second ride. Throw them away.

The seat is horribly ugly but actually feels good.

Avid brakes are more than adequate.

My only real complaint would be the Bontrager rims and the wheel build. These are supposed to be heavy duty but were out of true many, many times. My shop did rebuild the rear as a warranty job. The front was pretty trashed already but, after today's little mishap, I'm going to be buying a new wheelset anyway.

I've been happy with mine. Funny thing is, when walking out to the garage I end up picking this more times than not since I can abuse it and go wherever I want on it. If you can get a good deal - buy it.
