Been given a frame...What to do?Nboy
Apr 30, 2002 3:11 PM
I was spanked by some friends on cross bikes the other day (in my own defense I was on my single speed Mtn bike) but the fun they were having at my expense got me thinking…hey why not a cross bike too? I think it must be a group plot among my friends or something as a few days later another riding buddy offered me a 90’s vintage roadie frame that he had set up with canti bosses a couple of years back but never got around to finishing the project. Since then it has been hanging in his garage and now he’s spring cleaning. The frame is a 90’s vintage Team Fugi, Chrome Moly, Dbl Butted 331 steel, I don;t know the geometry (sp?). When I threw my road wheel set (Araya 700c w/ 700/23c tires) on it there is about 5/8ths inch clearance between the rubber and the frame and or fork at the apex of the tire. Is this enough to allow for cross tires?

I guess my first question should be is this frame worth building up? There are a couple of tiny rust specks on it but it’s pretty clean in general and I think I’d be using this as a “fun” bike, but then I tend to work my other "fun toys" pretty hard. I don’t think I’ll be giving up my SS of Full suspension Mtn Bike any time soon but who knows, I’ve been swayed by the dark side before. Other questions would be, ) what rims to build up as I have a pretty nice pair of 28 hole hubs (will these be strong enough if I do a good build job?, ) are roadie cranks “strong enough” or should I go with Mtb. Cranks, gearing? )where do you buy “cross bars” on the net, )good canti brakes? (I’ve got some used XT canti’s lying around from my Mtb would these work?).

Sorry for the ignorance implied by the questions but I have never really looked at cross bikes closely before and just kind of had this land on me so if I can set it up for pretty cheap…why not.

Personal stats: 43yo male, 6-1, 170lbs, ride 2-4 days a week, been Mtn biking for 15+years and although I don’t race I ride with those who do and they have to work for it if they are gonna drop me, ex tri-athelete.

Thanks in advance for the replies.

Sorry about the typos, the web page doesn't seem to like my word processor.

I'd say if you just peruse this site for a few days or so and read old posts, you will gain a decent knowledge of cross bikes in general and maybe even find the exact answers to your queries.

A few answers:

Either crank type is fine, gearing is variable.

I'd skip the 28 hole hubs.

Salsa makes nice cross bars. Any road bar that you have laying around will be okay for now until you learn different.

XT cantis would be great.

Good luck, have fun!
