was swapping my 42 ring for a 39 today and found that 3 of the 5 bolts were cracked (the part that goes if from the frame side of chainring)
why did this happen?

wrong tension?
failure to clean the rings before tightening the bolts?
they are from a dura ace chainset.

i've replaced them but if they crack again could i reuse them if i don't have spares

I wouldn't use them again if I were you, they are cheap to buy new. I've never heard of a cracked chainring bolt before. Were they completely tight when you went to take them off? Maybe they were cheap bolts?

they were pretty easy to take out. not very tight. they were dura ace alloy bolts and cracked in half.
i replaced the cracked bolts with ones i 'borrowed' from my brothers mtn bike while he is in college. better leave him a note so he doesn't ride it untl i replace them:)
