Question for Surly Crosscheck riders(5 posts)

Question for Surly Crosscheck ridersmikenice

My front derailleur (Tiagra) is sub-par. It will not shift smoothly, no matter how it is adjusted. My Crosscheck is stock from 2001, with 48/36 rings. Has anyone had similar front-shifting problems? What did you do to fix? Thanks.

My LBS swapped out the cranks for a Sugino triple - works fine and my knees are happier on the mountain.
were you having the same problem?mikenice

Did you keep the Tiagra derailleur on there when the triple was installed?

I wanted the triple crank and the QBP crank that came with the bike supposedly doesn't work as well as a triple with the Tiagra. I kept the Tiagra front der, put on an XT rear der and an 11-32 cassette (very knee friendly on the steeper trails around here - I've had 4 surgeries already.) I'm also using barcons so the front der is friction shifting, not STI.

I built my Surly form the frame up so I don`t have a Tiagra front der but, other bikes in the shop with that der don`t shift well. Upgrade to something better , the tiagra front der does not shift well at all. Spend the money on an ultegra.
