I've been reading a lot about cross lately, and i want to give it a try. I was thinking about converting an old mountain/hybrid bike to do the job. With the exception of tires, i have enough spare parts here and there to do it. So the question is, are there any narrow 26" tires that are suitable for cyclocross? Most of the narrower tires that i've come across are slicks. Thanks for your help.

I am in the process of starting a similar project myself. The smallest I found was the 1.5 Continental Cross Country. A lot of folks have used these for tires on a mtb for a quick fix for cross racing. The next closest I found were 1.7's from Specialized (Extreme Control?- but I think they are discontinued), IRC Notos, and maybe something from Vredestein. After that, the jump to 1.8 -1.85, which isn't that much narrower than a standard knobby. You may also want to check a QBP or similar catalog at your LBS. They may have something cheap from Kenda that I may not have found.

I have ben running the 26x1.5 on my single speed cyclocross built from an old bianchi mtb. They have quite good grip on hardpack and in mud as well, I was lucky and got them for $40/pair from my LBS on closeout (list was $50/tire).
They are quite nice and much faster than the 2.0 tires I had been running.

FWIW, the Specialized Extreme Control/Master are still available. Well, at least they were last week when I saw them on in the bargain bin.

I could have swore I saw a tire narrower than 1.5" this year at InterBike, but I can't remember now. I really thought Continental made it, but maybe it was just that they brought back their 1.5" tires. Here is a link to them. Great great tires!

What about the avocet cross tire available in 26x1.25? Has anyone tried the tire for cross? I found it at and also at nashbar.

I saw those too, but they are more of an inverted tread design than a knobby. Instead of having bumps that go out from the tire (knobby), there are bumps that go in from the surface. I was worried that the indentations would pack with mud, and not provide enough of a tread for decent grip offroad.

If your looking for something cheap check with your LBS. Several companies have 26x1.5 interconnected tread tires which are copies of the old Ritchey Quads. They would work well and go for about $13-$15 each. The Conti crosscountrys have a deep tread and more rolling resistance then the old Quads.

I came across a pair of Michilen 26" sprint tires, althought they are a tad wide at 1.75" or 44c(mm). They have the same treads as my cyclocross sprint tires. I think I will try a set.
