|I've got question about dismounting...when coming to a section where you need to shoulder a bike, how do you go about grabbing the bike (by the top tube)? I mean when you approach the barrior with you right foot unclipped between your bike and your left foot do you grab your top tube with your hand backwards (with you palm facing away from you?)? or do you grab it with your palm facing toward you? I know i need to just go watch someone else do it but no one else races cross here in east TN, so i must teach myself. thanks|

|the top tube should be grasped palm up from the underside.
the point at which to grasp the tube is in vertical alignment with the bottom bracket, or slightly forward. Should be the balance point of the bike.
Sometimes it is more easy to grasp the downtube (palm up, again); riders with smaller frames do this. This technique is also most helpful when the bike is loaded with mud and that extra 2-3 pounds makes the top tube dead lift a back buster!

|If you need to shoulder the bike, you should be grabbing the down tube. It is scary at first being bent over...but practice it slow and then build up speed as you gain confidence.You will make alot of time with this move.
Pick up the video of the 2000 Worlds in Holland...the fastest guys ( with a few exeptions) all do it this way.

|I do it a little differently...
I grab the toptube thumb forward, lift the bike and hook the saddle on my schoulder. Than I grab what's within reach, either stem, downtube or headtube.
This way the centre of gravity of the bike is much lower. And putting the bike back down is a lot less complicated : just grab the tubtube again, slide the bike off my shoulder and gently put it on the ground.
Works for me!
Oh, I do have a long inseam length, so there's a lot of room under the saddle, that helps.
