i recently got a cross bike and will be taking it on my first trail ride soon. What type of maintenance should i be doing on my bike after rides to keep from taking it to the shop often?

clean what's dirty - tighten what's not

I`ll second that, with emphasis on routine cleaning of ders. and chain. Also clean out brake shoes(the little grooves found in most pads, also check for embedded grit ) and wash down rims to prolong the life of both, grit wears down the rims in bad conditions quickly. You should also be lubing brake and der cables with a graphite solution or triflow ( or a similar product ) to keep cables running smoothly. Keep in mind that blasting any bearing unit with a hose (power or otherwise) is not in your best interest unless you overhaul them frequently. A CLEAN and LUBED bike runs better and lasts longer.
