I know they allow off road bikes but is it that big of a disavntage, I can mount 1.5 conti tires, and the bike is in the 20 lb range so I guess it could work, I want to get a taste of cross. Thanks

So what's stopping you?
A mtb is fine to start, get your feet wet and see if you like it.some folks use an old road bike with skinny cross tires...but your better off on a mtb as far as gearing goes.

The only regulation I know of for CX racing with a MTB is bar extensions are not allowed. I say many CX racers this past weekend at the Southern Colorado CX series racing with MTB's, and they did very well. Tire selection should be done on the day of the race, given the race conditions and the layout of the course.

That sounds better than what I race on. I picked up a 26 lb road bike for $30 used and still have a blast on it!
