Avid Shorty Brake Setup(6 posts)

I'm going to set up my first Canti brakes on my
new Gunnar frame soon. I'm wondering if I need to purchase separate cable hangers for the front and rear brakes. That is: do I need some sort of bracket to attach to both the seatpost and the head tube to terminate the cable housing? If so, will these come with the brake set? (they haven't arrived yet) I've searched both Nashbar and Excel, and they don't seem to sell these items individually.

I believe the frame has a cable hanger on it....but you will need one for the front. Nashbar used to list them...any good shop should have some laying around, although they are getting rare in these days of v/disc brakes.

Most older shops should have ones for the front left over from the days most MTB`s didn`t come with suspension forks. Upgrading to a suspension fork ment removing this piece, as the brake cable now terminated at the fork brace. We did quite a few fork installations on new bikes during this time. Any older LBS should have them or they can order them from QBP for you.

You can get the front bracket from, it is listed under their cable accesories if I am not mistaken. If the rear does not have a hanger (I would imagine it would if it is a cross frame) they also have piece that attaches to the seatpost clamp.

Thanks. Interestingly, the Crosshairs does not have a brazed-on rear cable hanger.

The Gunnar doesn't have cable hangers as Gunnar normally sells this bike built up with v-brakes and travel agents. I had my LBS order a 1" clamp on hanger for the front. It's about 5mm thick and clamps onto a threadless steerer. I also had them order a hanger for the back that fits over the seattube binder bolt. There are pictures that show them here:
