Singlespeed cyclocross question...Colin S.

Hi. I'm thinking about building a single-speed 'cross bike with a Surly frame. Anyway, what's a good gear ratio to start with? I was thinking 36x18 or so... Also, should I use 170mm or 175mm cranks? I plan on riding offroad as well as doing a few road rides with the road team. I have a Redline Conquest right now, but I'd like something steel (not so harsh off-road) and a little simpler, since I only use ~ 3 gears on any given ride. Plus I'd like to be able to run 40c's. Anyway, has anyone done anything similar? I'd really appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Colin

for what it's worth I used to run a 38-17 last year om my SS CX bike. I found it pretty good for races, not so much for off-road MTB type riding so more of a 2:1 ratio would be better for that. As for cranks, I used 175mm which is what I have on all my bikes. Road riding on a single? You'd need to change out for a big ring I would think, that sounds painful.
