|Has anyone tried the speedplay frogs for cyclocross? If so, how are they holding up? Any problems with the cleats? Thanks.

|I haven't ridden cross with them, but I have used them on my MTB for 6 years and think they're great, even in snow and mud (I ride in Colorado year round). I can always get in and out in conditions where other people are cursing their SPDs. Cleat wear is dependent on how well you keep them clean (walking on them has no effect) - for me that's about a year or two. I've read that Time ATACs are the best in mud, but I don't really know first hand. If the choice is Speedplay vs SPDs, definitely go Speedplay.|

|As a long-time Speedplay user - both X/2s and Frogs - I was surprised how much I disliked Frogs for 'cross. |
For me, the problem was that the Frog cleat took up too much space in the shoe's cleat pocket (indeed, this is why you must trim the soles of many shoes just for the Frog cleat to fit). This made remounts sketchy; if I didn't nail the clip-in on the first try, my foot would go skidding off the pedal.
Shortly after that I got a set of ATACs. The smaller cleat is much more forgiving of clip-in miscues.
I still use Frogs for touring and commuting.
