Anyone know where such a part can be purchased for my Roadie? Or why I shouldn't?

FSA is soon coming out with an alloy compact crankset which should come in both octalink and ISIS. I think the standard setup will be the same as their carbon model-50/34. I recently got the carbon one, but haven't hit the road yet to see how it performs being I'm currently in the icebox in Maine. I think it's going to work great for me. Good luck.

Is the 36 that important?

36 because I want two more years before I have to have a 34 or a triple. The compact design can ease me into semi-retirement.

Stronglight offer 2 alloy compact cranks, the Z Light Compact and the Impact Compact. However, the BB interface is not Octalink.

Ritchey has one in the works. I emailed them; they said February availability and around $200.

to view.

I thought of one but the gear charts show that half-shifting will be a pain (i.e. shift rings and you'll need to double or triple shift in the back to get the gear you want).

Consider a larger cassette?

Already have a 12-27 cassette and was hoping to avoid changing the rear der to XT or XTR. I will check for the Ritchey next month, thanks. Maybe an older 110-74 crank would match up with some new 9-speed Salsa rings.

Doug from FSA here.

We just started shipping these about a week ago. We are already sold out, but our distributors should have some to make available to dealers.

Energy cranks are hollow forged, Isis Drive, 34/50T and weigh 580 grams.
