Converting a 8-speed Shimano triple to a 9 speed triple?MikeBiker

I need to replace the shifters on my 8-speed 105 triple. If I replace the shifters with Ultegra 9 speeds, replace the derailer ,cassette and chain, do I also have to replace the chain rings?. I assume that the rear hub does not care if the cassette is 8 or 9 speed.

Thanks for helping.

I did that conversion on a tandem several years ago. At that time I was told that I needed to replace the rear derailleur but that the front would be OK. Eventually I had to replace the front derailleur to get it to shift to my satisfaction. I left the 8-speed crankset alone.

Frankly, I'm not convinced that replacing the rear derailleur is necessary. Since the rear derailleur guides the chain by the jockey wheels in the middle of the chain, the width of the chain shouldn't matter.

Right, shifters chain and cassette ought to do it. 9 speed FD has a slightly narrower cage, but often work ok with a 9 speed setup.
