|Using a long socket extension and a hammer, I've knocked star nuts out of the bottom of the fork.|

|I used a drill with progressively larger bits to remove the threads of the starnut. Once you have removed enough metal, the flanges can be removed pretty easily.
I had to do this because the bottom of the steerer tube was restricted by a 1/2" hole on the underside of the crown.
I think I got this tip from Zinn's book...
