Shimming out a Front Der??(5 posts)

Shimming out a Front Der??Spiderman
Dec 10, 2003 8:28 AM
Received a new frame last night. Chomping at the bit to build it up but forgot that my front der. is a 1 3/8" rather than 1 1/4" the frame needs. Is there any way i can shim it out? I have some rubber shims laying around from computers and stuff, but not enough. What about a few layers of electrical tape? Anyone out there have some suggestions?

Thanks for your help!!
I would not use rubber, it would give too much...TFerguson

For a temp solution, I would use a shim made out of analuminum can. Use one of your very thin rubber strips first to protect the paint.

Rivendell Reader dealt with this several months ago, and Grant said cotton bar take works fine. But if you have to go buy that, you might as well get the right derailleur. Front d's are pretty cheap, and they all work about the same.

I used some thick, soft, clear plastic material to shim an oversized derailer once...lasted for years.

Try using rim tape. But get a new derailleur with the correct clamp size as a permanent fix.
