Sealed bearing removal...(3 posts)

Sealed bearing removal...TFerguson
Dec 9, 2003 8:58 AM
Need to remove a press-fit sealed bearing from a Mavic hub. I want to re-use the bearing. If I were to knock it out with a punch, can the inner ring take the lateral forces or do I have to push on the outer ring?

Thanks,
TF

Pushing or pulling the bearing out even when you use the inner race could be successful. With knocking however the risk of pitting the races and or flat spotting the balls is very large. If it doesn't come out straight you might also destroy the hub seat in the process.

Outer race only.
There should be full contact on the face. Ideally they should be pressed out rather than knocked out. But if hammering then many light taps all around (using an alum. punch) rather than a few brutish slugs.
