|I have a C'dale R800 with almost 800 miles on it. My left shifter is always rattling with every bump in the road. There isn't any play side to side with the shifter. All the play is in the up and down of it between the lever and the housing. No problems with the right side. Is there anything I can do about this? I didn't know if I could tighten the lever up a bit? It is really annoying going down a quiet bumpy county road listening to the rattle.

|I've owned Ultegra STI and Dura Ace STI and they all rattle. Just one of the many reasons I ride Campy Ergo.|

|Easy fix. Shimano refers to the rattling piece as a toe cap. It is replacable in case of crash (read cosmetic) damage. Pop the toe cap off with pen knife or small screwdriver. It may be wedged upward or forward. Go slow on the cap, you do not want to damage it. Once the cap is off tighten the phillips screw. Pop the toe cap back on and test for rattle. Repeat until the rattle stops.
Remember how to stop the rattle. It comes back every 1-1.5K miles.

|It actually isn't the cap. I have taken the cap off and it does nothing for me. The problem is play in the lever. The right side is still nice and tight but the left side is really loose. I can just pick up the front of the bike an inch and drop it and the lever rattles.|
